Paging Mr Peter...
The boss came up to me today and said he needed to "chat" with me in private real quick. This sort of thing always makes me nervous, and my mind immediately turned to a minor non-event this weekend that wasn't really my fault but maybe someone decided to make an example and now I'm going to be escorted out.
Instead, he told me that our current team lead has given notice, and that the job is basically mine if I want it, presuming I don't demand something ridiculous like ONE MILLION DOLLARS or sharks with frickin laser beams.
The current team lead leaving wasn't unexpected, but the offer was. I've only been with the company, with the entire financial industry, for barely four months. Every other person on the team I would be lead of has been with the company longer, some by months and some by years. So I'm also left wondering if I'm just the last person offered the job to not respond with a resounding "FUCK NO!"
I have a life-long aversion to management positions but I am assured that team lead is *not* a management position. I would need to be involved in hiring to the degree that I would be one of the people doing interviewing, but I would not be doing reviews, have signing authority, etc etc.
I've been given time to mull it over and come up with a salary proposal. I'm inclined to accept the offer, just for the opportunity to go full-time with benefits and paid time off and big pants and all that. I guess the worst that could happen is I will fail miserably and have to go back to doing what I already mostly like doing now. There are a lot worse places to be in this economy than a trading firm that does not hold assets.
